Wrexham owner Rob McElhenney’s class gesture after mocking Ryan Reynolds

Rob McElhenney mercilessly trolled long-time friend Ryan Reynolds with an “actual superhero” dig before unveiling a class gesture for his Wrexham co-owner. For Reynolds’ birthday, McElhenney filmed a skit alongside Marvel superhero Chris Pratt, who played Star-Lord in “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Avengers” films, to announce a memorial park in the “Deadpool” lead’s honor.

Pratt also played a starring role in the hit show “Parks & Recreation,” which made him the best man for the unveiling of The Ryan Rodney Reynolds Memorial Park. The park is based on the old Wrexham Hippodrome. “Do I get to meet Ryan? Do you think maybe he could do something for my birthday and maybe me and him could take over and then it could really go big,” Pratt joked at the end of the skit.

McElhenney tweeted: “Thank you @prattprattpratt for finally following me on social media and for helping me announce The Ryan Rodney Reynolds Memorial Park. $25,000 has been donated in your name to the @SpecialOlympics as a token of our appreciation for you and for that wonderful organization!”

The “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” actor’s generous tribute to his friend is in response to the song made by Reynolds for him on his birthday. In April, Reynolds released a song for McElhenney on his special day. The song jokes about McElhenney’s tricky name, and he’s even called for it to be sung in the stands at The Racecourse Ground.

The song was uploaded to Spotify and other major music streaming platforms. “This is…. I mean… I don’t…. Wow,” McElhenney responded on X, formerly Twitter.

McElhenney and Reynolds’ fairytale ownership of Wrexham doesn’t look like stopping any time soon. The League Two Club finds itself third in the fourth tier of English football having just won promotion from the National League. They are three points behind Notts County, who also gained promotion to League Two last season via the playoffs, and five off Stockport.

Wrexham is on a seven-game unbeaten run, with a 2-1 win coming in their last outing against Sutton United. It took some heroics to win three points. “I think the crowd got frustrated which led to the lads wanting to do their best but forcing things with their football which they didn’t really need to do,” assistant manager Steve Parkin told the Wrexham Leader.

“We just needed to stay patient, and we go right to the very end. They are a great set of lads, they work hard and they never know when they are beat, and that little bit of quality did them in the end.

“They really believe in the dressing room, as we do of course, that they go right to whatever it may be; 100th minute if necessary. But the key thing is we don’t want to be relying on that all the time and we have already relied on it quite a bit this season. At the end of the day, there’s loads of different ways to get three points and we will take it.” An away trip to Notts County is up next on Saturday.
