Veron names Man Utd team-mate who impressed him most after joining club

Former Manchester United midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron played alongside a number of great footballers during his time at Old Trafford but he has named Red Devils legend Paul Scholes as the one who impressed him the most.

Veron counted the likes of David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Ruud van Nistelrooy as United team-mates but he believes Scholes "was the full package".

In an interview with FourFourTwo, Veron said: "It was a pleasure to train and share moments with all of them. But if I had to pick only one, it would be Scholes.

"He was the full package. He could recover the ball, attack and shoot extremely well, and he was clever – a terrific reader of the game. He had everything."

Speaking last year, Gary Neville called Veron an "amazing player" but explained that he thought the fierce competition in midfield made it difficult for him to establish himself at Old Trafford.

"He was an amazing player, Juan Sebastian Veron," Neville told Sky Sports. "The reason it didn't happen for him, in my opinion, was that we had the best midfield that I think English football has ever produced – and I think will ever produce.

"I honestly think those four players [Beckham, Roy Keane, Scholes and Giggs] are four of the greatest players that Manchester United have ever had.

"You’ve got the two top appearance makers in that midfield, you’ve got a global megastar and amazing player in David Beckham and you’ve got Roy Keane who’s the most inspirational football player that I’ve ever seen."

  • Asked about Neville's assessment, Veron added: "We had Nicky Butt as well. That midfield was magnificent, with guys who had known each other very well for a long period – they played almost by memory.

"Maybe there just wasn’t room for me to show what I had that was so different. With or without me, that midfield was pretty good!"
