Tottenham urged to cash in on star not in Jose Mourinho’s plans after summer transfers

Tottenham chief Daniel Levy has been told to offload Erik Lamela during the January transfer window, as it is obvious the playmaker doesn’t feature in Jose Mourinho’s plans in the eyes of Noel Whlean. Tottenham increased their attacking options during the summer and it seems there is no room for Lamela.

Lamela has struggled for game time so far this season.

The Argentine has started just two Premier League games in the current campaign, and has played just twice in the Europa League.

He’s largely been restricted to minutes from the bench, and has just two assists in all competitions so far.

Tottenham utilised the summer window to improve their attacking options, with Gareth Bale and Carlos Vinicius both signing on loan.

Lamela was initially brought in to be a replacement for Bale after the latter’s move to Real Madrid in 2013.

But upon his return to the club, he appears to have pushed Lamela back down the pecking order under Mourinho.

The South American has found himself as a backup option at best, with Mourinho’s front three of Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn supported by Lucas Moura, Vinicius and Bale.

And because of his bounty of options available to him up top, Mourinho has been urged to offload Lamela in order to free up some funds.

Former Leeds United striker Whelan told Football Insider: “He’s been at Tottenham a hell of a long time now, Erik Lamela, and he’s always been one of these players that is a go-to from the bench.

“He’s had short spells when he’s been a starter in the side, more so with Mauricio Pochettino.

“Now he’s the sort of player that, on his day, can be a world beater. He can score great goals, he’s fantastic with the ball on the deck, great pace, good eye for a pass.

“It’s a catch 22 situation.

“If he’s desperately needed by Jose Mourinho, then they should think about getting a new contract on the table for him.

“If he’s not in Jose Mourinho’s plans and they feel they want a fresher person in that position, then you do have to cash in. It’s as simple as that.

“Lamela has still got a lot to offer a football team and could get regular game time so you’ll get more money from him now then in another year’s time.

“If you want to get some money for him the best way would be to cash in at the end of the season.”
