Tottenham have a number of stars who might struggle to win a place back in Antonio Conte’s side after another poor performance in their 1-0 defeat by Chelsea on Wednesday. Antonio Rudiger scored the only goal of the game as Spurs crashed out of the Carabao Cup.
Spurs were poor once again at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and could not turn around a 3-0 aggregate deficit after Rudiger’s goal.
That is despite VAR correctly overturning two wrongly-awarded penalties and then ruling out a Harry Kane goal for offside.
It follows an underwhelming performance against League Two Morecambe in the FA Cup, in which more than a couple of fringe players under-performed.

The wing-back has failed to find any kind of form since arriving from Wolves in the summer of 2020.
Conte is now the third successive manager to not play the Ireland international regularly. That is despite Conte’s successor, Nuno Espirito Santo, being his former Wolves boss.
Doherty has been linked with a return to the Midlands outfit. It could see him used as a player-exchange for Adama Traore, if wide reports are to be believed.
It has been suggested that Conte could train Traore to play as a wing-back in a similar move that saw Victor Moses play in the role under Conte at Chelsea.
Giovani Lo Celso
There was much hype around Argentina international Lo Celso when he joined Spurs in 2019 on an initial loan deal.
That switch was made permanent in January 2020 but, like Doherty, the midfielder has struggled for game time under successive bosses.
The 25-year-old has played in just eight Premier League matches, including just two starts, and has been criticised for his lack of goal involvement.
Lo Celso has scored just eight times and provided only six assists in 83 appearances for the club.
He has featured in eight of Conte’s 15 games but it seems that a transfer might be best for all parties.

Spurs might have had more of a chance of mounting a comeback in this EFL Cup tie had Gollini not flapped at an early corner.
The loanee, brought in from Atalanta alongside Cristian Romero, misjudged the flight of a set-piece, which allowed Rudiger to score his 18th-minute goal.
It was the only goal of the second leg and gave Chelsea a huge 3-0 aggregate advantage.
Gollini’s appearances have been limited to the Conference League, the EFL Cup and the FA Cup, making 10 appearances across all three.
But with Spurs now out of two of those competitions, Gollini will find himself limited for action given that he has hardly done much to threaten Hugo Lloris’ position.
