Chelsea: Lampard admits lethargy in Arsenal defeat
Thomas Tuchel has been tipped to replace Frank Lampard at Chelsea if they lose to Aston Villa in their Premier League showdown on Monday (5.30pm). The German is currently available after losing his job at PSG on Christmas eve. And it was previously claimed he made a ‘very good impression’ on Blues supremo Marina Granovskaia when he held talks about taking over at Stamford Bridge from Antonio Conte in 2018.
Chelsea have seen their hopes of winning the Premier League title dealt numerous blows in recent weeks.
Lampard’s side have slipped to three defeats from their last four top flight matches, against Everton, Wolves and Arsenal respectively.
Earlier on Monday, German newspaper BILD claimed Chelsea were eyeing Tuchel.
It’s said that, should they succumb to yet another defeat against Aston Villa on Monday night, Roman Abramovich will not hesitate to wield the axe.
Tuchel is available following his departure from PSG and, in 2018, it was claimed he made a ‘good impression’ on Blues supremo Granovskaia.
Rafa Honigstein relayed this news, saying that Tuchel had a meeting with the Chelsea powerbroker about potentially replacing Antonio Conte.
He told the Totally Football Show: “I have it on pretty good authority that Thomas Tuchel made a very good impression on Marina Granovskaia in a meeting they’ve had.

“I don’t know how recent that meeting was.
“Remember, they were talking to him before the start of this season on the assumption that Conte might actually go.”
In the end, however, Tuchel didn’t take over.
He instead took on the job at PSG, replacing Unai Emery at the Parc des Princes.
Tuchel did well enough during his time at the Ligue 1 giants, winning consecutive league titles as well as guiding them to a first-ever Champions League final.
But he was axed nonetheless, with Mauricio Pochettino now primed to take over as manager.
Meanwhile, ESPN pundit Craig Burley thinks Lampard must guide Chelsea to a top four finish this season if he’s to stay in a job.
“[Lampard’s] got players out of form, he’s got players that are not fully fit, and that’s a problem,” Burley said on ESPN FC.
“They have gone from looking one of the paciest, quickest sides in the Premier League, to one of the most pedestrian.
“That is a huge issue for him because you may have noticed with this owner Roman Abramovich, he doesn’t suffer inconsistency, bad results, no matter who it is.
“So let me be clear, Lampard is back on the chopping board currently as we speak.”
Burley, who won the FA Cup during his time at Chelsea in 1997, does not think Lampard will be sacked in the near future.
But he reckons failing to qualify for the Champions League will spell the end of his time at Stamford Bridge.
“It’s turn-up time for Lampard and these players because this cut and thrust period can make and break you,” Burley added.
“I’m not suggesting Abramovich is going to sack him in the next couple of weeks, but there is one thing they need to remember – top four.
“If they don’t get in the top four, he’s probably done.
“It’s a big season for him, it looked as if it was going swimmingly and now it looks like they’re sinking a little bit with a weight around their feet.
“He’s going to have to find the reason to put it right.”
