Erling Haaland’s double helped Manchester City secure derby day delight as lifeless rivals Manchester United were outclassed in an embarrassing home defeat.
The eyes of the footballing world were on Old Trafford as the neighbours met in the 191st Manchester derby and first since Pep Guardiola’s men matched their 1999 treble triumph.
Haaland scored a spot-kick and unmarked header before playing in Phil Foden to wrap up 3-0 victory, yet City’s dominance was far greater than the scoreline suggests.
It was an abrupt end to an unconvincing three-match winning run in all competitions for Erik ten Hag’s United, who have now lost five of their 10 opening Premier League games.

City fans show appreciation for Sir Bobby
There was some concern over how the tributes to Sir Bobby Charlton would be respected after Manchester City banned two young fans in the week over a sick chant, but we need not have worried.
Pep Guardiola said beforehand that City’s fans would do their club proud and he was right.
Even before referee Paul Tierney blew for the official minute’s applause, City fans showed their appreciation for the United legend when a surf banner was unfurled across the Stretford End and a ‘Sir Bobby’ mosaic appeared in the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand.
Switch highlights shortcomings
Erik Ten Hag said he left Raphael Varane on the bench for tactical reasons, even though United’s central defensive partnership of Leicester City old-boys Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans has been highlighted as a sign of their shortcomings.
Let’s not forget that Pep Guardiola once tried to sign both players – just not in recent memory.

This was Pep Guardiola’s seventh win at Old Trafford since he arrived in Manchester in 2016.
Under the Catalan coach, Manchester City have picked up 145 more points than United, won 60 more Premier League games, scored 229 more goals and finished the season on average with 19 more points than their neighbours.
United’s home struggles
In losing half of their 10 Premier League games this season, incredibly United have only been in front for 29 minutes at home and 98 minutes in total.
Only Sheffield United, Luton and Bournemouth had a worse record than that going into this round of fixtures.
Indeed, United have now lost as many Premier League games at Old Trafford in the decade since Sir Alex Ferguson retired as they did in his 26 years at the club.
