Former Tottenham star Teddy Sheringham has urged Spurs to beat Arsenal to the signing of Ivan Toney in January.
Ange Postecoglou’s side have not been found wanting in the chance creation department and have responded well to the departure of Harry Kane last summer.
New skipper Son Heung-min has taken the mantle of chief goalscorer, while his performance on the wing against Newcastle – where he provided two assists – showed he is still capable of excelling out wide.
Despite scoring in every game this season, Spurs have only managed to net more than two goals in a game on two occasions, leaving Sheringham to argue that a more clinical No 9 is needed.
‘Everyone is talking about Arsenal getting Ivan Toney in January.’ He told Gambling Zone. ‘He seems to be the only player in the centre forward position that might be available in the next window.

Ange Postecoglou has been rewarded for moving Son Heung-min into the centre of the attack
Ivan Toney has remained in high demand despite sitting out the first half of the campaign due to suspension
‘I would love to see Tottenham nick him off of Brentford and get there before Arsenal do. Toney has got something about him. He carries himself well and can take on the mantle of being the main man at a club.
‘Everyone is suggesting that he could be the icing on the cake for Arsenal, but I think he could be a big, big player for Tottenham at this moment in time.’
The 27-year-old is currently out suspended serving a ban relating to betting offence that will keep him out until January 17.
Brentford are very keen to keep hold of the forward who scored 20 goals in the league last season and will demand a price in the region of £100million to let him go next month.
The England international is also reportedly sought after by Chelsea, whose manager Mauricio Pochettino suggested his team would need to dip into the market to fix their ‘many problems’.

Sheringham added: ‘He could spearhead Tottenham’s attack. [Son] isn’t really a centre forward. He loves to run in behind, but he doesn’t play like a centre forward – you need a focal point in your team.
‘You need that man that brings it all together. A player that can lead the line, stretch defences, hold the ball up and bring others into play. I see Ivan Toney as a player that is more than capable of doing that.’
