Gareth Southgate has confirmed that Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell suffered a back injury during England’s defeat to Belgium on Sunday evening.
The 23-year-old was forced off after just 38 minutes as first-half goals from Youri Tielemans and Dries Mertens sealed a 2-0 win for Belgium.
Chilwell’s back complaint will now be assessed ahead of England’s final Nations League match against Iceland on Wednesday evening, but it’s likely that the Chelsea defender will not be risked as both sides are already out of the competition.
Chelsea are now waiting to see the extent of Chilwell’s injury before their Premier League campaign resumes against Newcastle United on Saturday.
When asked about Chilwell’s injury after England’s loss to Belgium, Southgate said: ‘He had some sort of issue with his back that he was complaining about and he didn’t feel he could carry on.
‘Outside of that I can’t give you any detail at the moment.’
Meanwhile, Southgate is now concerned that clubs will now begin to pressure their players to miss England’s final group game against Iceland at Wembley.
‘We will find out a lot now because for sure there will be pressure from some clubs on their own players,’ said the England manager.
‘That is what we live with constantly but we have players who want to play for England and we have pride in the way we play and we want to finish well.’
