Size of Man Utd wage bill still baffling despite cutting £52m with Ronaldo exit

Manchester United's wage bill dropped by £52million when compared to last season – but the numbers remain staggering.

The mutual agreement between United and Al-Nassr forward Cristiano Ronaldo saved the Red Devils £16m in future wages as their overall outlay on player payments fell to £331.4m from £384m after other departures.

United enjoyed record English record revenues of £684.4m last season but still managed to make a loss of £42.1m despite the Glazer family not taking a dividend for the first time in seven years.

Football finance author Kieran Maguire has said: "The club is making losses still, but at least they are substantially lower than the £150m in 2021/22.
