Setien: Barca struggled against Espanyol and 'wait' for Real result

‘We didn’t have a great game’: Quique Setien admits Barcelona struggled against basement boys Espanyol… and says side must ‘wait and see what Real Madrid do’ as LaLiga title slips away

  • Espanyol impressed defensively but were downed by a Luis Suarez goal

Quique Setien has admitted that Barcelona had a tough night against bottom of the table Espanyol – despite picking up the win.

Barcelona failed to put in a convincing performance in their 1-0 win at the Nou Camp on Wednesday evening, scraping past their city rivals courtesy of Luis Suarez’s goal in the 56th minute.

And Barcelona manager Setien suggested his side had struggled against Espanyol’s defence.

‘We didn’t have a great game,’ Setien said about the performance after the match. ‘We found it very difficult against the defence Espanyol had.

‘They were very intense, very closed, and we didn’t have the space or precision to move in.’

Barcelona found it particularly hard to get shots in on goal as they looked to break down Espanyol.

Espanyol were fighting for their LaLiga lives, with the defeat confirming that they would be relegated to the second-tier.

Luis Suarez scored the only goal of the game for the hosts as they picked up three points

And Setien has suggested that a packed back-line meant it was hard for his side to take the three points.

‘It was very difficult,’ Setien added. ‘They did a great job defensively. They had a lot of players gathered, so it’s not easy with so many players there.’

Now Barcelona are a point behind Real Madrid and have played one more match than their rivals for the title.

They play Alaves on Friday night and Setien continued: ‘We’ll have to wait and see what Real Madrid do.’
