Ronaldo has claimed that Paris Saint-Germain may still struggle to win the Champions League this season, even with the wealth of world-class talent at Mauricio Pochettino’s disposal. The Brazilian legend has also noted similarities between himself and one of PSG’s star attackers, Kylian Mbappe, who has entered the final year of his contract at the club.
Having surpassed all expectations in the summer transfer window, there is a general feeling that this could be the year PSG finally secure European glory.
In the space of a few weeks, Real Madrid megastar Sergio Ramos, Euro 2020 Player of the Tournament Gianluigi Donnarumma, flying right-back Achraf Hakimi, Liverpool fan-favourite Gini Wijnaldum and certified GOAT candidate Lionel Messi were all lured to the Parc des Princes.
As the dust settles, former Barcelona, Real Madrid and Brazil icon Ronaldo, who is now the majority owner of Real Valladolid, had his say on their prospects.
“Paris Saint Germain is in pole position, but the football is talked about,” he told DAZN.

“That is one thing and the football played is another. There are many factors that influence the field.
“I played for Real Madrid for almost five seasons, in the Galacticos team (with Zidane, Beckham and Figo, among others…) and I never won the Champions League.”
Regardless of the notion that money cannot guarantee success, PSG’s owners cannot be faulted for their ambition, or their ability to put the side in the best possible position to win.
On deadline day, a colossal £172million bid for Kylian Mbappe from Real Madrid was turned down, despite the fact he could move for free next summer.

The Parisians have certainly not forgotten their Champions League near-miss back in 2019, and the owners are sparing no expense to get it over the line this time.
Putting modesty to one side, Ronaldo added: “Yes, [Mbappe] has similar characteristics to mine. He has crazy qualities.
“He has a remarkable technique and knows how to use it at high speed. He goes from the defenders, jumps to goalkeepers.
“He has running skills and to be fast, as they say. And, despite being very young, he has already come a long way. I like Mbappé.”

Many see the Frenchman as a future Ballon d’Or winner, although he will have to claim two over the course of his career if he is to live up to the Ronaldo comparison.
Averaging approximately one goal per game, his ruthless scoring rate has arguably outgrown Ligue 1, much as Ronaldo’s did in the Eredivisie when he was still a teenager.
All things considered, PSG are likely to benefit from their illustrious band of players for one season only with Mbappe almost certainly Madrid-bound.
Pochettino is spoilt for choice, but undoubtedly under a mountain of pressure to succeed.
