Liverpool regained slight control of their Champions League group when Paris Saint-Germain struck late against Napoli to claim a point. An expected win against Red Star Belgrade would be another step towards qualification for the Anfield club, but the final two games will be decisive with the group finely poised.
Xherdan Shaqiri has not travelled to Serbia to ensure Liverpool “avoid distractions” caused by his Albanian heritage, the club confirmed on Monday. Tensions exist between Albanian and Serbian populations and Shaqiri was fined by Fifa during the World Cup for making a symbol of the Albanian flag while celebrating a goal.
Naby Keita and Dejan Lovren have, meanwhile, been included in Jurgen Klopp’s 21-man squad to make the trip east after recovering from injuries but Jordan Henderson will remain in Liverpool to continue his recovery from a hamstring injury.
