Real Madrid 'reignite interest in Manchester City's Raheem Sterling'

Real Madrid ‘reignite interest in Raheem Sterling’ with the Manchester City star losing his automatic starter role to Phil Foden and admitting last week he has had ‘a weird season’ due to his time on the subs bench

  • Raheem Sterling has been on the bench for several of Man City’s recent games
  • Sterling was dropped for both Champions League last-eight ties with Dortmund
  • The winger is reportedly back on the radar of Spanish giants Real Madrid
  • The 26-year-old has 14 goals this season but just one in his last 12 matches

Raheem Sterling is back on Real Madrid’s radar with the England winger no longer a regular starter at Manchester City, according to reports.

So far this month, the 26-year-old has been benched by Pep Guardiola for both of City’s Champions League quarter-final legs with Borussia Dortmund along with the Premier League trip to Leicester City.

Sterling started Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea but was part of a Manchester City attack that barely threatened as Guardiola’s men exited the competition via a 1-0 victory to ruin their quadruple hopes.

And according to the Daily Star, Sterling’s recent lack of game time under Guardiola  has alerted Real Madrid – especially given discussions over a new contract for the Englishman have been shelved for next season.

Sterling, who has two years left on his current City deal, has13 goals and 11 assists for the current Premier League leaders this season but has not found the net since a 1-0 victory away at Arsenal in late February.

The winger himself has admitted he has been a ‘weird’ season for him and that being sidelined or not being involved has frustrated him during this campaign.

The Man City and England admitted this season has been ‘weird’ regarding his game time

‘Don’t get me wrong, this season for me personally has been a very weird one,’ Sterling told Rio Ferdinand for BT Sport. ‘But nevertheless I’m still enjoying my football and giving my all to the team.

‘Yeah don’t get me wrong, if I don’t score or do something to help the team I’m not happy coming off the field.

‘Of course I am happy we’ve won but at the same time I think that’s what helps me to get these goals is to be that driven and it’s the perfect time in the season now.’

Sterling’s record of one goal in his last 12 games has seen his starting City place taken up by Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez in recent weeks, with Ferran Torres another wide player competing for a spot in Guardiola’s eleven.

City starlet Foden is competing with Sterling for another starting spot at international level as England prepare for this summer’s European Championships.

Sterling and Foden are competing with the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho for a starting spot, with Jack Grealish and Jesse Lingard other Three Lions player who could turn out in these roles.
