PSG goalie Sergio Rico ‘lost 20kgs’ in coma but vows to return to football

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Sergio Rico has vowed to return to football after a life-threatening injury which left him in a coma.

The 29-year-old was kicked in the neck by a runaway horse in May while on an annual pilgrimage in Spain. He was placed in a medically-induced 26-day coma after suffering a brain aneurysm, having come within "half a centimetre of death," according to reports in France.

Rico left the hospital in August – and the Spaniard has now revealed he lost 20kg in bodyweight after the accident, which he has now almost entirely put back on.

The shot-stopper went on to stunningly reveal how he is already eyeing a return to the pitch, despite having not played a single minute of football for PSG since the 2021/22 season.

He told a Spanish radio station: “I'm looking forward to the doctor giving me a little more freedom because I feel good. I want to go back to my routine and feel like a footballer again. I lost 20 kilos… I weighed about 92 and I stayed at 73. Now I weigh 88 kilos.

Rico added: “I take it too calmly, it is not in my power. If it were in my power I would already be [back training]. I follow the orders of the doctors, who are in charge and those who have saved my life, without going overboard in the slightest."

His wife Alba Silva had taken to Instagram to deliver a heartbreaking message after the accident, writing: “Don't leave me alone my love because I swear I can't, nor do I know how to live without you."

Rico in turn paid tribute to Silva for her ongoing support last month with an emotional message on Instagram, which he posted alongside pictures of the pair.

"I have already publicly thanked all those people who have been with us from all over the world… to family and friends…. but today I wanted to thank you my love because you deserve it.
