Felix Magath has launched an astonishing attack on Pep Guardiola – claiming the Spaniard is overrated and labelling his football "boring".

Ex-Bayern Munich boss Magath reckons Lionel Messi was the secret behind Guardiola's success at Barcelona and that his tactics will never see Manchester City win the Champions League.

Guardiola has won the Champions League twice as a boss with Barca in 2009 and 2011.

But he has not lifted the biggest trophy in club football for almost a decade or even reached another final – despite going on to manage European powerhouses Bayern and City.

Since taking charge of City in 2016, Guardiola has not led the billionaires past the quarter final stage and saw his side suffer a humiliating defeat to French underdogs Lyon in the last eight of this season's competition.

Guardiola has won five league titles and eight cups in both Germany and England – but Magath admits he is still not convinced the 49-year-old is as good as people think he is.

The former Fulham and Wolfsburg boss said: "Messi won the titles, not Guardiola.

"Without Messi, this system has never worked as successfully for Guardiola, otherwise he would have won the Champions League with Bayern or Manchester City long ago.

"Tiki-taka only works if you have players who are technically superior to their opponents. For the spectator, holding the ball, as I call it, is just boring and a top team doesn't really need it.

"In my opinion, Guardiola generally too often gets lost in trying to win a game in advance. That tactic often ends in wrong decisions, which prevent success."

Guardiola has suffered a difficult start to the new Premier League season following one win from three league games – and is still no closer to signing a new contract extension.
