Ten Hag bemoans Man Utd’s lack of control at Galatasaray
Paul Scholes has blasted Bruno Fernandes for his comments during his post-match interview following Manchester United’s 3-3 draw with Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday night. The Red Devils threw away a two-goal lead that leaves them needing a victory against Bayern Munich to progress into the knockout stages.
After early goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Fernandes, Galatasaray pegged one back through ex-Chelsea playmaker Hakim Ziyech, who drove his low free-kick into the back of the net. Scott McTominay then extended United’s lead in the 55th minute before Ziyech scored his second goal of the night with another free-kick.
Kerem Akturkoglu then equalised in the 71st minute with a sensational strike to ensure that the spoils were shared, though United supporters have been left frustrated by the result given that Andre Onana made costly errors for both of Ziyech’s goal. However, Fernandes’ post-match conduct has drawn criticism from Scholes.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, the Portugal international said: “It was another game where we could have closed the game. We had too many chances, as I’ve said, and mistakes by ourselves. It’s too bad, to be honest. I don’t want to be too negative, but what we’ve been doing in the Champions League is not enough.”

Fernandes’ finger-pointing irritated Scholes though, who felt that the midfielder should have taken more responsibility given that he gave away the two free kicks that Ziyech scored from. The ex-England international said: “I know in his interview he is talking about mistakes, but he made two big mistakes tonight by giving two stupid fouls away that led to two goals.
“The full team, including himself as the captain, have to take responsibility – it’s a game they should win. They just cannot keep clean sheets – the defence is all over the place, the keeper is making mistakes, Bruno giving away cheap free-kicks.

“It makes the game difficult for them every time and they don’t need to do that.”
Bayern’s 0-0 draw with FC Copenhagen means that United can still clinch second spot in Group A, though Erik ten Hag’s side will need plenty to go their way. The Red Devils will need to beat Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern at Old Trafford and Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen’s clash must end in a draw – with both sides capable of progressing into the knockouts if they can secure all three points.
