Paul Gascoigne turd prank had players evacuating team bath, recalls Gary Lineker

England legend Gary Lineker has lifted the lid on a fresh (or not so) Paul Gascoigne prank that once sent his team-mates scarpering.

It's common knowledge that Lineker famously soiled himself at the 1990 World Cup, which he detailed during a recent appearance on comedian Joe Lycett's short-lived (and not entirely serious) podcast – The Turdcast. But in his defence, the Match of the Day presenter relieved himself completely by accident while in service to his country.

The same couldn't be said for Gascoigne, who knew exactly what he was doing when he reportedly decided to go for a No2 in the company of his team-mates following one game. And not just in their company – but the same bath water, too.

When asked if he knew of any fellow athletes who had similar struggles holding it in, Lineker, 63, replied: "Not accidentally [laughs]. Gazza used to let one go in the communal bath occasionally.

“At the end of the game, you're all covered in mud – and whatever else -and you’d all jump into a big bath together. Like a big hot tub," he explained. "There were no bubbles, except when someone farted.”

"Or when Gazza s**t himself," chuckled host Lycett in response to the trademark Gascoigne sense of humour. And Lineker replied: “You’ve never seen baths evacuated as quickly.”

Lycett, 35, was at first taken aback by the idea of a jumbo-size team bath, to which Lineker explained the concept of up to 20 men basking in one another's muck after a match. But that thought was quickly overshadowed by the prospect of Gascoigne, 56, and his idea of comedy.

Lineker and Gascoigne were Tottenham team-mates when they travelled to Italian '90 as part of the same Three Lions squad. And by then, the former was well-versed in his countryman's methods when it came to getting a giggle out of his comrades.

As it turns out, Lycett launched the Turdcast as a publicity stunt with the aim of raising awareness on sewage being dumped into the UK's waters. Lineker will finish as the first and last guest on the faux show, which Lycett aired in an effort to direct attention to British water companies and the fact they paid out £1.4 billion in dividends last year alone.

All jokes aside, the sanctity of British waters is the latest cause Lycett has succeeded in shining a spotlight upon in his own unique manner. As foul as Gascoigne's joke might have been, it didn't affect the taxpayer nearly as much as the current crisis damaging UK seas and inland water sources.
