Nuno Espirito Santo has placed his Nottingham Forest stars immediately on notice by saying their current squad is too big for his liking.
The Portuguese has signed a deal until June 2026, worth about £5million per season, to replace the sacked Steve Cooper and his first task will be to improve a run of one win from 13 games, starting at home to Bournemouth on Saturday.
Nuno did not talk explicitly about his plans for January but it is clear he wishes to reduce the size of the playing group. At least there will be two familiar faces – Willy Boly and Morgan Gibbs-White, who played for Nuno at Wolves.
‘I have never managed a squad of this size,’ said Nuno. ‘That’s a challenge for us as well but it’s a new chance for everyone, like the players who have not played regularly before.
‘I want everyone to be involved and to be committed so we can have more options. I can promise we will be an organised team who will give everything they have.’

Nuno had three hugely successful years at Wolves before his final season was clouded by Raul Jimenez’s career-threatening injury, as well as the ongoing effects of the Covid-19 pandemic which seemed to affect Nuno more than most.
He then had a disastrous four-month spell at Tottenham followed by a stint in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ittihad, which lasted 16 months and ended earlier this year.
‘There are no regrets about Tottenham,’ he said. ‘What happened, happened. It was a pleasure to be at Tottenham. Things did not go well and we move forward. Now it is a pleasure to be at Forest.
‘What Steve did here was huge – getting Forest back in the Premier League. We will try to improve his amazing legacy.’
