Noel Gallagher insists he didn't want Cristiano Ronaldo to join his beloved Manchester City – tipping him to go down as another Alexis Sanchez at Manchester United.

Ronaldo was reportedly on the verge of completing a shock move to City before the Red Devils hijacked the deal to bring their former hero back to Old Trafford.

The 36-year-old performed a drastic U-turn to pen a two-year deal with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, returning to United 12 years after departing for Real Madrid.

With CR7 in his ranks, many believe Solskjaer now has enough quality at his disposal to mount a serious Premier League title challenge this season.

However, City superfan Gallagher has instead compared Ronaldo to United flop Sanchez, who failed to live up to the hype after signing for the club in 2018.

When speaking about City's failed pursuit of Ronaldo on talkSPORT, the former Oasis star said: “I would not have been pleased about that.

“When the story came I texted someone I knew up at City saying, ‘tell me this isn’t true’, and he was like, ‘… well, apparently…’.

“Instantly, I was thinking there’s something going on there with United.

“But I’m glad he’s gone, I’m glad he’s gone to United. I’m happy he’s gone there.

“United fans always get giddy though, when Sanchez arrived they thought they’d win the league.”

The Red Devils faithful will hope Ronaldo does not turn out to be another Sanchez at Old Trafford.

After completing a controversial move from Arsenal in 2018, where he had established himself as one of the best players in the Premier League with a return of 80 goals in 166 games, the Chile ace endured a miserable run of form.

He only managed to bag five goals in 45 appearances and was then offloaded to Inter Milan on loan in 2019, before making the move permanent a year later.

Ronaldo is in line to make his second United debut against Newcastle on Saturday, with Solskjaer confirming he will definitely feature at some point in the game.
