Newcastle outrage as some think Carabao Cup draw was rigged by ex-Sunderland ace

Women's Super League preview | Football Digest

Some Newcastle fans have been left outraged on social media after they were drawn against Manchester United in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. The Magpies will face the Red Devils in a repeat of last season’s final after beating Manchester City in round three on Wednesday night.

Alexander Isak scored the only goal of the game at St James’ Park as Newcastle pulled off an impressive upset to send City crashing out of the tournament. All eyes were then fixated on the draw for the next round, which took place immediately after the final whistle and was conducted by Neil Lennon and former Sunderland striker Don Goodman.

Newcastle were then handed a tricky away tie at Manchester United, with Goodman responsible for drawing their ball out of the hat. Some fans on social media went on to accuse Goodman of deliberately pitting the Magpies against Erik ten Hag’s side, although there is no evidence to suggest the draw was rigged. The balls were selected at random under strict conditions as is standard with cup draws.

The EFL refused to comment on the allegations of the draw being rigged when contacted by Express Sport.

However, @GeordieMAG_ was adamant that Goodman was up to something sinister, posting on X: “What we have here ladies and gents is none other than ex Sunderland player Don Goodman having a good look for that number 16. Absolutely disgusting.”

@deanmarshall10 shared a similar view as he wrote: “Yep he barely took his eyes off the balls until he had 16! Needs looking into for me, don’t know what others think.”

The conspiracy theory was also peddled by @Daniel842476395, who added: “Don Goodman cheating on the draw again what’s going to happen then get it put out there guys. I want to play Man U but fairly drawn. Looking in the pot then drawing is b****** sorry.”

Others were quick to poke fun at Newcastle fans for insisting that Goodman had genuinely manipulated the draw against them. @DeanoCummings85 simply said: “They’re claiming Don Goodman rigged the cup draw now.”

Even other Newcastle followers wasted no time in shooting down the theory being pushed by their fellow supporters, with @NUFCThreatLevel joking: “Tin foil hats away. I remember Don Goodman and I can assure you he never had *that* level of technical ability with a ball.”

Newcastle were beaten by the Red Devils in last season’s Carabao Cup final, with Casemiro and Marcus Rashford scoring the goals to secure Ten Hag’s first trophy as manager of the club. Eddie Howe will be desperately hoping to put things right by claiming revenge at Old Trafford next month, but only time will tell if the Magpies can get the job done at the second time of asking.
