Newcastle United need to sign four top-class players in order to get them out of the relegation zone and up the Premier League table following the Saudi-led takeover of the club, believes TalkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor. The consortium completed the takeover from Mike Ashley on Thursday after the Premier League were reassured that the Saudi state would not control the club.
The Public Investment Fund (PIF), which is viewed as separate to the state itself by the Premier League, will provide 80 per-cent of the funds, bringing an end to Ashley’s 14-year period as owner at St James’ Park.
The takeover had faced several hurdles along the way and was initially abandoned in 2020 when the consortium was unable to prove the PIF was separate to the Saudi state.
A recent piracy dispute between Saudi Arabia and its Premier League broadcaster beIN Sports also temporarily halted the deal, until a settlement was reached earlier this week.
The immense wealth of their new owners means Newcastle are considered to be the richest in world football, meaning a whole host of household names have already been linked with moves to the club.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Agbonlahor revealed who he thinks the Magpies should sign, saying: “I scored a hat-trick against Manchester City and then they got took over the next year.
“The team that I played you wouldn’t recognise some of the players, they were a bang average side.
“So, this could be the same with Newcastle, gradually getting players in. I think Man City brought Robinho didn’t they, Elano. Then the next generation was like Kolarov, Dzeko.
“I don’t Newcastle are going to go big big big. I’m thinking the likes of Tarkowski, maybe Lingard. Maybe someone like Aaron Ramsey, Coutinho. Just get a group of players that can get them up the table, then go again every year.”

Ramsey and Coutinho are two names who have already been linked with a possible move to Newcastle, while Jesse Lingard and James Tarkowski are two new faces brought to the fray by the former Aston Villa striker.
Calcio Mercato have reported that Ramsey is considering a move back to the Premier League and Newcastle are one option.
Meanwhile, Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo claim Newcastle currently have three priority targets and one of them is Coutinho.
Lingard has made a comeback since his Champions League nightmare in Bern against Young Boys, but the England midfielder continues to struggle for game time at Manchester United.
Tarkowski has become a mainstay in Sean Dyche’s Burnley side since joining the club in 2016 from Brentford, but the centre-back could be tempted by a move to St James’ Park should Newcastle come calling.
Newcastle are currently second from bottom in the Premier League with just three points from seven games and may look to spend in January to help them move away from the relegation zone.
The new era at Newcastle will begin by welcoming Tottenham to St James’ Park on October 17 following the conclusion of the on-going international break.
