Newcastle could enter the market for a new goalkeeper after Nick Pope was ruled out for several months with a shoulder injury. Pope is set to miss most of the remainder of the Premier League campaign, with the Magpies possibly looking for a replacement. Express Sport looks at their options.
Aaron Ramsdale
Ramsdale will have his sights set on Euro 2024 despite being unceremoniously dropped in favour of David Raya by Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta. The 25-year-old might therefore be open to a temporary departure from the Emirates Stadium in January.
It remains to be seen if Ramsdale has a long-term future at Arsenal. His demotion in September came as a shock, with the England international previously being Arteta’s undisputed No 1 for two seasons.
Newcastle would be able to promise Ramsdale that he will be Eddie Howe’s first-choice shot-stopper for the remainder of the campaign. However, Arsenal may decide they do not want to sell to a club competing at the top of the table.

David de Gea
Former Manchester United man De Gea has not found a club since leaving Old Trafford under a cloud in the summer. The Spaniard was axed by Erik ten Hag, who replaced him with Andre Onana, for his underwhelming contribution with the ball at his feet.
Newcastle do not necessarily need a top-class distributor in goal, so would be getting an elite goalkeeper in De Gea. The 33-year-old has still not found a club and so would be available as a free agent.
Alex Meret
Newcastle could pull off a January coup by signing Napoli ace Meret. The 26-year-old has a contract that expires in the summer, meaning he could be available at a cut-price fee.
Despite the absence of a contract extension, Meret has played in 12 of Napoli’s 14 Serie A matches, with injuries ruling him out of two November fixtures. Struggling Napoli would benefit from the funds of a potential sale.

Hugo Lloris
Newcastle could put an end to Lloris’ sad phasing-out at Tottenham. The Frenchman has not featured since Newcastle’s 6-1 victory over the north Londoners in April, when he was replaced at half-time with a shoulder injury.
It seemed likely that Lloris would depart in the summer, with Spurs buying a replacement in Guglielmo Vicario. However, the 35-year-old remained and found himself cut from Spurs’ 25-man Premier League squad.
Lloris could be available for a small fee, and would be an excellent addition to Howe’s squad on a short-term contract.
Keylor Navas
With Gianluigi Donnarumma the No 1 goalkeeper at PSG, veteran shot-stopper Keylor Navas could return to the Premier League if offered a reprieve by Newcastle. The 36-year-old, formerly of Real Madrid, excelled for Nottingham Forest in a six-month loan spell in the second half of last season.
With Newcastle looking for a short-term replacement for Pope, the experienced Navas could be a good option.
