Newcastle have been told to pay £37.5million if they want to sign Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic, according to reports. The Magpies are facing paying premium fees as clubs take advantage of their huge wealth.

The Tyneside club’s new owners have already spent around £40m on two new additions this month as Eddie Howe plots a Premier League relegation escape route.

Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood have arrived at St. James’ Park to provide some much-needed quality and experience in defence and in attack respectively.

Howe is still keen to do business, though, particularly in terms of signing more defenders. Newcastle have conceded a staggering 42 goals in their 19 top-flight fixtures this term.

That must be plugged if his side are to stay up. Newcastle have frequently been linked with new centre-backs, including Lille’s Sven Botman and Sevilla’s Diego Carlos.

Another reported target is Fiorentina’s Milenkovic who has starred in Serie A. The 24-year-old has made 17 appearances this term.

But Newcastle will be asked to pay a staggering £37.5m transfer fee if they want to sign the Serbian, according to the Sun.

It is claimed that Milenkovic is wanted as part of a double swoop for two centre-backs.

The former Partizan Belgrade star has been widely linked with a move to the Premier League in previous transfer windows, with the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham named as possible suitors.

Newcastle are keen to continue their business with further additions expected. However, Howe has said that nobody will be signed before Saturday’s Premier League trip to Watford.

“We’re not close to anybody, the squad of players we have will be the squad for Watford.

“We are looking and we have time left in the window but we know we need to move quickly.

“Obviously we are still active in the market.”

Newcastle confirmed the arrival of Wood on Wednesday. The striker has signed from Burnley after the Tyneside outfit triggered the £25m release clause in his Burnley contract.

Howe was keen to bring a Premier League-ready player in to score the goals required to keep Newcastle in the top-flight.

He added: “We’re really pleased with the signing of Chris. I think he will fit in really well to the team.

“He is experienced and ready to play and he’s done very well historically for Burnley.

“He knows the Premier League and I think he gives us something different to what we have.

“I think all those qualities mixed together to make it a really powerful signing for us.”
