Mason Mount rivals N’Golo Kante as fittest player at Chelsea after latest tests

Mason Mount is arguably the fittest player at Chelsea – with only N'Golo Kante able to rival him.

The 21-year-old has shot to stardom after the arrival of Frank Lampard last summer.

After a year under his wing at Derby, where he spent the season on loan, Mount went straight into the first-team at Stamford Bridge.

And he did not leave it, making more appearances than anyone else in a breakthrough campaign at the Blues.

It even saw him called up to the England squad, where Gareth Southgate shares Lampard's thoughts.

Mount has earned plaudits for his exemplary work-rate, willingness to press and ability off the ball.

And helping him improve everyday is his incredible fitness – which is among the best in the Chelsea camp.

According to The Athletic, Mount is arguably the fittest player at the club – contending with Kante for that honour.

The Blues held a series of tests, of which the England international came out on top along with his French team-mate.

A source told The Athletic: “One of the reasons Lampard likes Mount is because he trains every day as if it is his last.

"He has the ambition to be one of the best.

"When the club made all the signings during the window, he reacted positively and made it obvious he was going to fight for his place.”

That has become a huge question mark over this season, with the signings of Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech.

The two were bought for big money and are expected to be key players under Lampard this term.

And that has left Mount's position in the team come under scrutiny – with him being dropped for the Crystal Palace match prior to the international break.

But Lampard has a ton of faith in the Portsmouth-born star, who insisted he has great attitude and quality.

He said: “There’s a fascination with Mason. He’s homegrown and he’s a young player who’s got regularly into the team.

“He is a humble lad, who has had a real dream to play for Chelsea.

"The thing that makes him special is he’s gone and attacked that dream with the talent he has and made it through pure hard work.

“He’s been picked regularly in the England squad because I know Gareth Southgate and (assistant) Steve Holland have absolute respect for how he comes and trains and performs for them.

"What Mason’s done is exceptional and there is a lot more to come.

"That’s part of the great thing about working with someone who has that attitude, mindset and quality.
