Mason Greenwood has sent a clear message to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer by admitting he wants to eventually fill the coveted centre forward role for Manchester United.
The 19-year-old has been a revelation since breaking into the United first team, scoring 17 goals in his first full campaign last season.
Greenwood – who signed a new contract until 2025 this week – has been a little bit slower off the mark in 2020/21, so far registering just four goals among his 30 appearances.
The majority of those performances have seen the teenager line up on the right side of a three-man attack, but it is thought over time he will move to a more central position.
And while he is setting his sights on being the focal point in attack long-term, he conceded to United legend Rio Ferdinand that he might not be quite ready just yet.
"I'm not really sure," Greenwood told Ferdinand during their Instagram Live chat, when asked which position he sees himself playing in.
"I've always wanted to be a striker when I was young but I've also been a winger in the youth team and obviously in the academy I was between both of them really.
"I would like to play up front eventually when I'm older, fill out a bit more and get a bit bigger and stronger for the centre-halves who as you know are always big and strong at the back.
"It's a place I do want to play, centre forward eventually but I'm always happy on the right and it's a good position to work from really."

Greenwood possesses a rare talent of being able to strike the ball equally well with both feet – an impressive attribute that some of his United teammates have already remarked upon.
That has certainly helped his transition into the United side by giving boss Solskjaer plenty of options, along with senior stars Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.
Solskjaer even commented on Wednesday that Greenwood has the necessary qualities to fulfil a No.10 role if required, but is in agreement that his future is more likely to be leading the line.
“He can play right, centre-forward, 10 and, at a stretch, maybe on the left. We just have to give him time to find his final position," Solskjaer said.
Where should United play Greenwood? Have your say below.
“He’s a forward who moves really well along the line at the moment at his age and at his development.
"Physically, sometimes you don’t want to be right up in the mix and in the middle with the big brutal centre-backs next to you. So I think we’ve found that he can play both really.
“That will be in the next year or two, if he’s going to be a No.9 or a forward or, as I said, as a shadow striker, in and around the goal.
"Definitely, we need him there even though his link up play and general play has improved a lot."
