Man Utd: Solskjaer assesses van de Beek performance
Manchester United need to sign a “young Edinson Cavani” to replace Anthony Martial up front, according to former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy. United signed Cavani on a free transfer last summer following his release from Paris Saint-Germain. The experienced frontman has scored four goals in all competitions so far under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Cavani’s goal haul this season is one fewer than Martial’s record of five but has come in 11 fewer starts.
Cavani is currently two matches into his three-match ban following his FA charge for misconduct relating to a social media post from November.
Cundy says United missed the Uruguayan in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final defeat to rivals Manchester City.
He does not think Martial is the answer up front and thinks a younger version of Cavani is what they should be looking for in the transfer market.

“The things that we know about United, for me now, is no Bruno [Fernandes] no party,” Cundy said on talkSPORT.
“If he comes to the party then United really tick.
“[But] United need a centre-forward. Martial again has shown that he just isn’t the answer. He’s not the answer up front.
“I mean, really [Marcus] Rashford is not that No 9 either, they have a role to play, but they need a younger Cavani.

“They missed Cavani [against City]. He would have played, whether he would have started or come off the bench, who knows, but they missed him, they really did miss him.
“And between the two sides United came up short, it’s as simple as that.
“They came up short against a better team, a team now that are starting to go through the gears nicely and starting to look very, very menacing.
“Watch out the rest of the Premier League, that’s all I will say.”
Elsewhere, United legend Dimitar Berbatov believes his former club should be in the market for Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos if he becomes available.
Ramos is out of contract at Real in the summer and can speak to foreign clubs regarding a free transfer.
Berbatov wrote for Betfair: “If United are going to buy someone, especially at this point in the season, they will be a perfect fit for the team. I don’t think they need anyone at the moment.
“I have read the reports about Sergio Ramos and there is a lot of speculation about his future. He could bring a lot of experience and steel to any team.
“Although he is 34, he is still a top player and United could do a lot worse. If he is available I can see a lot of teams interested in signing him.
“At his age of course Real Madrid are reluctant to offer him a long contract. Maybe they are arguing about money because it always comes down to money, but both sides should think long and hard about it because the grass isn’t always greener.”
