Manchester United are edging increasingly closer to a decision on Erling Haaland. Though they’d love to sign the Borussia Dortmund striker, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also have several other transfer targets in mind. And much will depend on Edinson Cavani, whose future will soon become clear.

Manchester United wanted to sign Haaland in January 2020.

And, though they ultimately missed out to Borussia Dortmund, they’ve retained a strong interest ever since.

Haaland has been in sensational form for the Bundesliga giants this season, scoring 35 goals in the Bundesliga and Champions League combined.

United, as a result, have put the 20-year-old on their shortlist of potential signings ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

However, the Red Devils appear to be edging closer to a development when it comes to finding out how much of a priority the Norway international should be.

At present, United have Cavani bang in form.

The Uruguay international has been a huge hit ever since returning from injury, scoring five goals from his last five matches.

He’s also showed he’s a team player, too, recently clocking up two assists in the club’s 6-2 victory over Roma in the Europa League on Thursday night.

In the aftermath of that match, Solskjaer confirmed he was trying to get Cavani to stay with the club – with Boca Juniors determined to bring the Uruguay international back to South America.

“Edinson was excellent,” said the 48-year-old.

“I’ve said before, he plays as a centre-forward should be playing, running the channels, being the focal points, creating chances for others, scoring goals.

“He missed a couple of chances as well, but that is what he is there to do really, if he gets three or four chances a game, he will score two or three goals.

“I’m absolutely delighted with him. You can see the difference in him, he’s worked up his fitness having had a long lay-off. He’s making up for lost time.”

Solskjaer then added: “Edinson was out for seven months and not playing football for a very long time before he came to us.

“He’s had a couple of injuries and has worked really hard to show his quality.

“He knows my feelings, he knows that I would love to have him for another year, we have spoken about it.

“I understand this year has been very difficult, but I promised him that Old Trafford and Manchester is a different place with fans in the stadium.

“I’m doing my best, nights like this [help], hopefully we can get to the final and hopefully he can see himself being here for another year.”

With the season edging towards it’s end, however, United won’t have to wait on Cavani for long.

A decision is poised to be made at the end of the campaign, even if there are murmurings he’s now decided to stay at Old Trafford for another year.

Should Cavani stay, United may decide to drop interest in Haaland for the time being.

After all, the 34-year-old is one of the best strikers on the planet when he’s in this sort of form – and one of the first names on Solskjaer’s team sheet.

With United having other targets on their radar, such as Raphael Varane and Declan Rice, it’s feasible they’ll allocate their funds elsewhere.

Should Cavani make it clear to United he wants out, however, then a full-on assault could be on the cards.

United won’t want to go into the campaign relying on Anthony Martial, who has endured a difficult campaign by scoring just seven goals.

And while Mason Greenwood is also currently in fine fettle, he’s still considered too young and raw to lead the line on a regular basis.

Meanwhile, United legend Paul Scholes hailed Cavani after his exploits against Roma – labelling the veteran as ‘sensational’.

“He was sensational. As you say, an all round centre-forward performance,” he said.

“You’ve seen your Marcus, your Mason, your Martial – we’re not quite sure they’re centre-forwards. Tonight that tells you, that is a real centre-forward up there.

“Led the line, brought players into play, great pass. Two brilliant goals. What a brilliant finish the first one was. Gave the keeper no chance.

“And a sniffers goal as well. It was a brilliant all round performance. Just disappointed he didn’t get the hat-trick really.”
