Man Utd urged to beat Man City to huge transfer and replace three first-team starters

Manchester United must attempt to beat rivals Manchester City to the signing of Kalidou Koulibaly, according to Ian Wright. Arsenal legend Wright believes huge improvements need to be made in United’s defence and has raised doubts about three regular starters in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Napoli defender Koulibaly is heavily linked with a move to City this summer, with the Serie A side looking for at least £60million.

But Wright believes the 29-year-old is a player United cannot afford to miss out on.

Wright is confident right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka is good enough to be United’s long-term option in that position.

However, he has questioned regular centre-back duo Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire, as well as left-back Luke Shaw.

“For me, from the defensive point of view, I just feel that they are still very weak,” Wright said on the Kelly & Wrighty Show.

“We’re hearing that Manchester City might get Koulibaly – United have got to go in there to try and do that deal.

“If you look at them from left-back, yes we know Wan-Bissaka is a fantastic right-back and a great defender, but Lindelof and even Harry Maguire – from the left side they’re there for the taking.

“If you’re gonna go and challenge those teams, that needs to be a lot stronger.”

Meanwhile, United full-back Diogo Dalot is keen on leaving the club this summer.

However, transfer expert Duncan Castles says the Red Devils have not yet granted the Portuguese permission to find a move.

“They do have to move players out and it’s interesting to see what’s happening with two guys who’ve dropped well down the pecking order in that very heavily-staffed defensive section of the Manchester United squad,” Castles said on the Transfer Window podcast.

“One of them, Diogo Dalot, the young Portuguese under-21 international, who has essentially been relegated to third-choice right-back in the planning Solskjaer is making for the coming season.

“Wan-Bissaka obviously has that position nailed down.

“I can tell you that Dalot’s not happy with his situation at United and is keen to leave, however he doesn’t have permission from the club to leave.

“You would think a loan deal would be a viable solution here, a loan with an option to buy in a year’s time, allow a player who was extremely highly-rated when he came to the club, picked out of Porto with a limited amount of experience because of the quality of his performances at Porto, [to leave].”
