Man Utd step up pursuit of next Erling Haaland with £40m needed

Haaland cooks up a storm at MNKY HSE

Manchester United are reportedly stepping up their pursuit of Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund this summer. Erik ten Hag is eager to sign a new No 9 this summer, with Harry Kane his preferred target. With Tottenham likely to demand a premium fee for their talisman, however, the Red Devils appear ready to move on to alternatives.

With Kane difficult to acquire this summer, United have also shown interest in Victor Osimhen and Randal Kolo Muani.

But The Mirror say they’re stepping up interest in Hojlund, amid a belief Atalanta are open to selling the forward.

The 20-year-old has been compared to Erling Haaland and netted 15 goals in his first season for Atalanta.

Hojlund is represented by the SEG agency, who also represent Ten Hag, which could give United an edge as they look to beat Real Madrid to the youngster’s signature.

Los Blancos know they need a new striker following the news Karim Benzema will be leaving the Bernabeu after 14 years.

And Hojlund is one player under consideration, with Kane also courted as Carlo Ancelotti looks to dethrone Barcelona as La Liga champions next season.

United would have to pay a fee of around £40million to secure the Denmark international’s signature.

Anthony Martial is being linked with a move away from the club, with injuries hampering the 27-year-old this term.

And United aren’t expected to sign Wout Weghorst on a permanent basis, with the Netherlands international failing to score a single Premier League goal following his loan move from Burnley.

Just two players scored more than 20 times for the club as they finished Ten Hag’s first season with a trophy and Champions League football.

Marcus Rashford got 30, while also registering nine assists from 56 appearances.

And Bruno Fernandes scored 14 goals and clocked up 13 assists from 59 games, often captaining the club ahead of Harry Maguire.

While United are eyeing Hojlund, Ten Hag is still unsure of his budget for the summer.

Figures of between £100m to £450m have been mooted but with the Glazers yet to make a final decision on a preferred bidder, the situation remains up in the air.

In addition to a striker, Ten Hag could also strengthen four other areas of his squad.

A move for a new goalkeeper is on the agenda, despite David De Gea being expected to sign a new contract for the club.

The club may sign a new right-back, amid strong links to Jermie Frimpong, while there’s interest in Kim Jin-jae from Napoli.

And United are hoping to snap up Mason Mount from Chelsea, while Ten Hag is open to moving for a fresh left winger.

Speaking earlier in the month, meanwhile, Louis Saha expressed a belief Hojlund would be perfect for the Red Devils.

“There are not many alternatives to Kane for Man Utd,” he said.

“Victor Osimhen is an obvious one at the moment, though, he’s scoring a lot of goals for Napoli.

“Very fit, very strong and agile. But it may take him more time to adapt.

“There is a young boy in Hojlund at Atalanta. But no one offers the guarantees like Kane does.”
