Manchester United vs Manchester City in pictures
Pep Guardiola has rubbed salt in Manchester United wounds by revealing the secret to Manchester City’s success after Sunday’s 3-0 win at Old Trafford. City cruised to victory in the 191st Manchester derby, continuing their era of dominance while the sense of crisis intensified at their rivals.
United were outclassed – a common sight against City across the last decade – as Erling Haaland netted a brace before Phil Foden added a third.
It leaves Erik ten Hag’s side with zero convincing wins and seven defeats in their first 13 Premier League and Champions League games this season.
Ownership uncertainty, fuelled by the Glazer family’s lack of communication and indecisiveness, continues to plague every corner of the club despite a resolution to an 11-month ‘takeover’ saga seemingly on the horizon.
Since losing Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill’s genius in 2013, United have primarily been a club in disarray, with the owners wanting one thing and everyone else hoping for another.
It’s a stark contrast to over at the Etihad Stadium. Owner Sheikh Mansour has made the right appointments and had the desire to form a legacy at City and improve the Manchester area.
Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, director of football Txiki Begiristain and chief executive Ferran Soriano all work with the purpose of meeting Guardiola’s vision.

Meanwhile, the Glazers’ regime has focused on commercial success, neglecting much sporting responsibility. Chief executive Richard Arnold isn’t a ‘football person’, nor was his predecessor Ed Woodward.
Football director John Murtough’s track record before his role at United isn’t exactly illustrious. The fact he and Arnold have handed Ten Hag almost full control over transfers – to little success – tells you all you need to know.
And Guardiola produced a damning assessment of why City are not levels but leagues ahead of United with little sign of change under the clubs’ respective hierarchies.
“But I didn’t expect it. Honestly, when I arrived here, it was Jose Mourinho, with Ibrahimovic, with top, top players, Lukaku, I’ve had the feeling the squad is really [strong],” Guardiola explained.
“But I think I’ve said many times we [City] are in the same direction – the chairman, the CEO, the sporting director, the manager and the players. We go there, wrong or right, it doesn’t matter, we [all] go there.
“We make mistakes, of course, when we lose, or the situation is not going well; we are not here to blame someone; it’s just, ‘okay, what do we have to do better? What happened? Is the opponent getting better, or are we getting worse?’

“Find a solution. That is nice. We’ve done it since day one. In the first season, we didn’t win; I didn’t feel my chairman complained, absolutely not; he supported me unconditionally.
“I remember we lost the Champions League final against Chelsea. I was devastated, and the chairman said, ‘Sooner or later, we’re going to win it; what do we have to do next?’.
“With that, everybody feels that the club relies on me; the players know we rely on them, but when it happens, we’re not over-excited when we win, and when we lose, it’s not dramatic, it’s not that we’re going to kill ourselves.
“It’s a football game; what do you have to do to get better? We have done many times. When another opponent beats you, you congratulate them, and we try it again. That’s why I think the club, the organisation, is so stable.”
