Manchester United have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of a sensational move for Cristiano Ronaldo this summer. The Portuguese superstar has emerged as one of United’s top targets with the 36-year-old ready to move on from Juventus.

His first spell at Old Trafford was highly successful, winning three Premier League titles and becoming one of the world’s best players.

That earned him a world-record move to Real Madrid, where he went on to win four Champions Leagues.

He has had a less successful time at Juventus though, failing to win Serie A this season and being knocked out of the Champions league at the last 16 stage in successive seasons.

Despite enjoying another impressive individual season, having finished as the top scorer in Italy this term, he now appears unhappy with life in Turin.

Ronaldo is entering the final year of his contract, making a sale likely this summer if Juve are to recoup any of their £100million outlay to buy him from Los Blancos.

The Red Devils appear to be one of the leading contenders to secure a transfer for the attacker if he does indeed leave Juventus.

A handful of clubs appear able to rival United, with Paris Saint-Germain and Real other possible destinations.

But it is United who have been handed a major boost in their hopes to complete a sensational deal, with The Athletic reporting a move to PSG is “unlikely”.

Though it is stated that Paris is seen as the “perfect” place for Ronaldo to end his career, there appear to be several roadblocks in the way of a deal.

One of those roadblocks is that the Ligue 1 club are not expected to be major players in the transfer market in the upcoming window.

The collapse of France’s lucrative TV rights deal has harmed their finances, with PSG instead focusing on tying Kylian Mbappe and Neymar down to long-term contracts.

The deal for Neymar has already been completed, with the club understood to be “hopeful” that Mbappe will soon follow.

Those contracts would make up much of PSG’s budget for next season, leaving a move for another superstar less likely.

The report states that PSG were offered Ronaldo last summer, but the French club turned such a move down, though the Portuguese star’s management agency denies this.

The Athletic also claim that the relationship between Ronaldo’s agent and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is frostier than it once was, creating another roadblock.

The ongoing doubt around the future of manager Mauricio Pochettino is also moving PSG’s attention away from the transfer market, potentially creating space for United to move in on Ronaldo.
