Manchester United have been slammed over their ‘desperate’ deadline day signings by Liverpool legend Phil Thompson.
The Red Devils wrapped up deals for striker Edinson Cavani, defender Alex Telles, winger Facundo Pellistri and forward Amad Diallo on transfer deadline day.
Anfield hero Thompson believes this demonstrated a ‘scattergun approach’ from the Premier League giants, however, and says it was a ‘very poor’ transfer window for the club.
‘I’m a little bit disappointed with Manchester United,’ Thompson told Paddy Power.
‘They put all of their eggs in Jadon Sancho’s basket, and they must’ve known at some point that he wasn’t going to sign for them.
‘They then brought in four players on the last day of the window, and that’s just scattergun approach and desperation for me.
‘Edinson Cavani has been a tremendous striker, but it felt very ‘that’ll do’.
‘It was just them getting a big name in to keep the fans off their back. It’s been a very poor window for Manchester United.’
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer identified England ace Sancho as his top target over the summer but Manchester United failed to agree a deal with Borussia Dortmund.
Liverpool are now said to be in the running to sign Sancho either in January or next summer but Thompson still believes United are the favourites to secure his signature.
He added: ‘Jadon Sancho brings a lot of things to a team, not just goals, but plenty of assists too.
‘That’s just like Mo Salah when you look at his previous stats – his assist ratio was absolutely massive.
‘And that is something perfect to have in your locker, it’s something he could bring to the team.
‘That being said, after signing Jota, although it would be a coup to secure him, I think having Jota will leave the door open for Manchester United.’
