Man City fans say ‘football is finished’ after disallowed goal against Liverpool

Manchester City fans believe "football is finished" after a second goal against Liverpool was disallowed in controversial circumstances.

Pep Guardiola's side had to content themselves with a 1-1 draw against their familiar rivals at the Etihad Stadium. Erling Haaland's Premier League record breaking goal gave them the lead at half-time, but a crisp, 20-yard effort from Trent Alexander-Arnold helped secure a draw for Jurgen Klopp's men.

However, in-between the two goals, Ruben Dias thought he had put the game beyond the Reds, when he capitalised on a rare error from Alisson Becker to prod home from three yards. Unfortunately for the Citizens, the goal was not to be.

Alisson tried to catch an in-swinging corner which was delivered right on top of his head. However, the ball slipped through his hands and fell into the path of Dias, who was there to tap the ball home from inside the six-yard box.

As soon as the ball hit the head, Liverpool players flocked around the referee to say that Manuel Akanji had fouled the Brazilian. VAR was called for and the Switzerland defender looked to brush against Alisson as he went up to catch the ball.

After the goal was disallowed, Manchester City supporters – and many neutrals – were furious with the decision. One City fan said: “We say it every week but football is finished that’s never a foul," before another added: “I don't even know what to say, but how is that a foul?"

One Liverpool fan even suggested they had got away with one when they tweeted: "Alisson got away with one there to be honest. Looked soft. . Could've gone either way that." Another City fan also said: "Akanji didn’t even foul Alisson. The softest challenge I’ve ever seen. Absolute robbery."

A very frustrated Arsenal fan also took their opportunity to reference the goal Newcastle United scored against the Gunners, which saw Joelinton put both hands on Gabriel in the build-up to Anthony Gordon's goal.

"So that’s a foul on Alisson but Joelinton climbing on Gabriel with two hands wasn’t. Make it make sense." Maybe, Arsenal fans need to just move on.
