Gremio manager Renato Gaucho has confirmed that Sunday will be the final game the club will have with Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez.
Suarez has been set to depart the club for months and now is set up for a potential move to MLS to re-join his friend Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.
The striker has had 26 goals in 51 appearances – a kind of output Gaucho wishes was staying at the club.
‘Are we going to miss him? Certainly, without a doubt, he is very loved by everyone,’ Gaucho said ahead of Suarez’s final match.
‘I had the pleasure of working with a great professional, one of the best in the world, fourth highest scorer in the world. This void will remain for the next year, because it’s not easy to find someone of his talent and ability.

‘When you find someone else, it’s unfeasible to bring him in financially. Unfortunately, as I said before, it was very difficult for him to stay. Everyone wanted it, but only he could reverse this decision.
‘Unfortunately, he will leave and there will be this vacuum in Gremio’s attack. Then it’s up to the board and president to try and find another striker.
‘It was a great pleasure, not only for me but for the whole club. A guy who always gave himself, an exemplary professional.’
Even at age 36, Suarez took to the club with great energy and willingness to win with the side from Porto Allegre.
‘It’s a great sadness for everyone,’ Gaucho continued. He arrived at the beginning of the year, he has helped us a lot, the fans were enchanted with him.
‘He is an extraordinary professional on and off the field. He arrived quietly, he was letting go, playing, accepting the games.
‘I often wanted to take him out of training or a game, but he wanted to continue. He wants to play every game and it doesn’t hurt.’
Suarez’s departure could lead to a reunion with his former Barca teammate, Lionel Messi
It’s not clear how the club will afford Suarez – as all three DP slots are filled, including Messi
While a move to Florida has not been confirmed, it’s believed that Suarez is keen to join Inter Miami in January.
He’ll arrive before the start of the 2024 MLS season in February – where he’s expected to have an impact up front.
What awaits him is a team made up of Messi and former Barcelona teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
It’s not exactly clear how Inter Miami would bring Suarez into the club – as the club’s three designated player spots have already been taken by Messi, Busquets, and Leonardo Campana.
That means Inter Miami would likely need to clear salaries of other players in order to bring in Suarez under the league’s salary cap.
