Liverpool vs Man Utd referee appointment could be bad news for Klopp

Jurgen Klopp might be getting an earful from the referee on Sunday after it was confirmed that Paul Tierney will take charge of the Premier League champions at home to Manchester United.

In what has become a huge fixture in this season's title race due to the recent form of both sides, United will go to Anfield on top of the table if they get at least a point from Tuesday evening's trip to Burnley.

Liverpool will hope that a game against their fierce rivals will spark their title defence following recent disappointing results against West Brom, Newcastle and Southampton, but if things aren't going to plan for Klopp then Lancashire official Tierney might end up clapping back at him.

That was the case in July when an angry Klopp challenged Tierney on his failure to award a free-kick following an apparent foul on Gini Wijnaldum in a match against Aston Villa.

With the Reds drawing 0-0 at the time, an angry Klopp protested against the lack of a foul.

Tierney's response, as initially reported by the Liverpool Echo, was short and sharp, as the referee told Klopp: "I missed it Jurgen. I’m like players, I’m going to make mistakes. I missed it. Get over it."

With the Anfield stands empty, the referee's reply could be heard echoing around the ground, and it appeared to silence the Liverpool boss.

Klopp eventually saw his side win 2-0 thanks to goals from Sadio Mane and Curtis Jones.

Tierney has been in charge of Liverpool twice so far this season, overseeing the 2-0 win at Chelsea in which he eventually sent off Andreas Christensen via the help of VAR, and the goalless draw at Newcastle.

He has also already overseen Manchester United on Merseyside this season, taking charge of their 3-1 win at Everton in November.
