Liverpool star Naby Keita gives Jurgen Klopp Everton boost with conflicting COVID-19 test

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita is set to be available this Saturday for the Merseyside derby, after reportedly returning a negative coronavirus test. The former RB Leipzig man had initially tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week but it now appears to be a false result.

The Reds know they will have to be at the top of their game this weekend, following Everton’s faultless start to the season.

Carlo Ancelotti’s table-topping side have won all seven of their matches this season, including their opening four Premier League games.

Liverpool are out to make amends following their embarrassing 7-2 humiliation at Aston Villa last time out.

Jurgen Klopp looked set to be without Keita, who was the latest Liverpool player to be affected by the coronavirus.

The Guinea international has started all four of Liverpool’s Premier League matches so far this season as he looks to build some momentum.

However, now the Liverpool boss is expected to have Keita available following a surprising twist.

Guinean journalist Amadou Makadji tweeted: “Naby Keita have had another test today. He is negative and he has been allowed to leave the training camp of Syli National in Portugal this night. He will join Liverpool where he might undergo another test.”

Keita is expected to undergo routine COVID-19 testing at Melwood upon his return to England.

Five Guinea players initially tested positive for the virus, including Keita folllowing the 2-1 win over Cape Verde on Saturday.

Thankfully for Klopp, he will also be able to call on the services of Sadio Mane and Thiago Alcantara.

The pair were pictured back in training yesterday following their period of isolation.

Mane was forced to sit out of the trip to Villa Park while Thiago has not featured since his debut at Chelsea.

While on international duty, Xherdan Shaqiri also returned a positive that later turned out to be false, the Swiss FA confirmed.

At the start of October, Klopp warned the authorities that they were toying with danger by allowing international football to go ahead amid the ongoing battle against the pandemic.

“I don’t want to sound disrespectful about how other countries are doing it,” Klopp said.

“But this is the place that we know and we know how we are dealing with it.”

He added: “So I am slightly concerned because it is difficult to be in contact with all FAs [football associations] all over the world.

“I understand it, I really understand how difficult the situation is but it’s not exactly perfect, the information we get from certain FAs.”
