Alexis Mac Allister made a nightmare return to Brighton as his error gifted his old club the lead against Liverpool.

After Virgil van Dijk found him in the Reds' half, a flat-footed Mac Allister lost the ball to Simon Adingra, who strode forward and slotted beyond an out-of-position Alisson. Following last weekend's controversy at Tottenham, where Liverpool were denied a goal because of a VAR communications error, Jurgen Klopp suggested the game, which his side lost 2-1, should be replayed.

And in light of Mac Allister's howler, fans of rival clubs joked that Liverpool supporters will be demanding the same against Brighton. One quipped: "That’s not on, the lad intercepted the Liverpool pass… There should be a replay!!!!"

Another joked: "Human error, that's gonna need a replay." A third posted: "Should probably replay this then, hey @LFC." A fourth waded in: "Liverpool want a replay already." Another laughed: "Replay the pass, Van Dyke!"

Klopp said the Tottenham game should be replayed as he faced the media ahead of his side's Europa League clash against Union Saint-Gilloise in midweek. The German said: "I think the only outcome should be a replay. It probably will not happen.

“The argument against that will probably be if you open that gate then everybody will ask for it. I think the situation is that unprecedented – it didn’t happen before.

“I’m 56 years old and I’m absolutely used to wrong decisions, difficult decisions but something like that as far as I can remember has never happened. That’s why I think the replay would be the right thing."

His plea triggered derision from fans and sections of the media. Opposing managers are also against the idea, with Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou saying: "I think Jurgen’s said that and maybe that was taken a little bit out of context. My view is when you’re talking about a replay, there’s got to be some sort of threshold and I don’t think a mistake is a threshold for that.

"It was a unique mistake, people have used an unprecedented mistake and I agree with that, but it was still a mistake. So, if your threshold for replays is mistakes by individuals, that’s 365 games a year, I reckon.”
