Liverpool can sign four players as Man Utd swap deal forces Klopp to change plan

‘It was a mature performance’ | Jurgen Klopp reviews Liverpool’s win at Sheffield United

Liverpool look set to be forced to alter their January transfer plans due to rivals Manchester United. The Reds were keen to strike a deal with Borussia Dortmund for Donyell Malen in the winter window, but the Netherlands international could be on his way to Old Trafford instead as part of a swap deal involving Jadon Sancho. Liverpool will need to be quick on their feet to identify alternatives, and Express Sport takes a look at four potential targets that could be pursued instead of Malen…

Johan Bakayoko (PSV)

Having come close to joining Brentford over the summer, Johan Bakayoko has only justified further why so many clubs have registered an interest in acquiring his services. The 20-year-old has scored three and assisted eight in 15 league appearances, with his electric pace and desire to run in behind making him one of the most exciting players in the Eredivisie. Liverpool have a long-term interest in Bakayoko, though other Premier League outfits also have him high on their list of priorities.

Federico Chiesa (Juventus)

Italian talisman Federico Chiesa has been linked with a move to Anfield on numerous occasions over the years, though there looks no better time for the 26-year-old to head to Merseyside. The versatile forward has four Serie A goals to his name so far this season, though that undersells his importance in Massimiliano Allegri’s setup.

Leroy Sane (Bayern Munich)

Despite Bayern Munich making it clear that they want to extend Leroy Sane’s contract, Liverpool could make a late attempt to lure him away from the Allianz Arena. The Germany international has been one of the most in-form players in Europe this season and if he was to leave the Bundesliga then Bayern would have every right to demand a significant fee for the forward. However, Liverpool are not shy of coughing up significant fees when they feel the opportunity is right, and Sane could be exactly that given his electric start to the campaign.

Nico Williams (Athletic Bilbao)

Numerous Premier League clubs have scouted Nico Williams this season, and his contract extension with Athletic Bilbao is unlikely to deter interest. The 21-year-old has scored two and assisted five in 12 league appearances, making an impact on the international stage with Spain as well. Williams can play on either wing and through the middle if required, and his versatility is likely to prove very attractive to Jurgen Klopp.
