Dan Burn can’t play for England at left back because he is TOO TALL, jokes IAN LADYMAN on Mail Sport’s It’s All Coming Up podcast… as CHRIS SUTTON tells his co-host to ‘ask himself some serious questions’
- Dan Burn has enjoyed a fine start to the season for Newcastle playing at left back
- But he missed out on the England squad for games against Australia and Italy

Ian Ladyman has jested that Dan Burn cannot be picked as a left back for England because he is too tall.
The Newcastle defender has enjoyed a superb start to the season, playing every minute of the Magpies’ Premier League and Champions League matches.
Burn was perhaps unfortunate not to be picked by Gareth Southgate in his squad for the internationals against Australia and Italy over the coming days, especially given the injuries to Ben Chilwell and Luke Shaw.
And former Premier League winner Chris Sutton, speaking on Mail Sport’s It’s All Coming Up podcast, debated Burn’s controversial omission with co-host and football editor Ladyman.
‘I find it quite astonishing that Dan Burn hasn’t got an opportunity for England,’ he said.

Co-host Chris Sutton disagreed and argued the Newcastle defender deserved his chance

‘With the left-back situation at this moment in time and no natural left back in the squad.
‘Burn is flying. I know he’s 30, 31, whatever he is, but on form he deserves a chance.’
However, Ladyman disagreed, but for not for footballing reasons, as he said: ‘You know why I don’t really think that Dan Burn can play as a left back for England? He’s too tall.
‘I just don’t like the thought of a six foot three left back. It just doesn’t look right. When you look at your team, you should have two smallest full backs and two tall centre halves. It just looks right.
‘It shouldn’t look like this. I don’t want the England defence to look like that. That’s all.
‘The Welsh defence didn’t look right when Joey Jones was in it all those years ago. So I just think that’s the reason.’
Sutton hit back at Ladyman and defended Burn, who measures at 6ft 6ins as he retorted: ‘But what difference does it make? It’s about the best person in that particular position. I bet you’ve argued that pretty regularly.
‘So then what’s different about that? Just because you’re not the tallest, what’s your issue with tall people, I don’t get it, that’s utterly ridiculous.’
Burn has been in fine form for Eddie Howe’s side so far this season, excelling at left back
Ladyman claimed it doesn’t look right if your full back is taller than your central defenders
Ladyman reaffirmed his point in reply as he said: ‘I just don’t think your full back should ever be taller than your centre halves. That’s all. If we had two, seven foot centre halves, that would be all right.’
Sutton couldn’t quite get his head round what his co-host was saying as he added: ‘If I was you, I’d get my coat and I’d go out for a long walk and I’d start asking myself serious questions.
‘You need to have a good look at yourself. You need to evaluate where your career is heading, if that is your view. Dear me.
‘It started off as a serious football chat. And then you want somebody banished from the England team because they’re tall.’
