Jurgen Klopp has taken aim at PGMOL following their statement after Luis Diaz had a goal against Tottenham wrongfully ruled out for offside in an eventful match in north London. VAR has been under the spotlight once again this season with some contentious decisions being made on a weekly basis.
PGMOL were forced to apologise to Wolves boss Gary O’Neil after VAR failed to award his side a penalty for Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana’s challenge on Sasa Kalajdzic. Human error has been blamed for the controversial decisions and that was the same answer given by PGMOL for VAR’s embarrassing blunder during Liverpool’s trip to Tottenham on Saturday.
Liverpool had been reduced to 10 men after Curtis Jones was sent off, but Klopp’s side were still pushing for the game’s opener and thought they found it when Diaz seemingly broke the offside trip and finishing brilliantly from a tight angle. The assistant’s flag stopped his celebrations short, but an instant replay of the incident appeared to suggest it was much tighter than first thought.
Despite the images suggesting Diaz was in fact onside, no lines were officially drawn on VAR’s images. And a quick decision was made to stick with the onfield decision with play going on as normal.
But PGMOL admitted after the match that “significant human error” was to blame for the disallowed goal not being given. However, Klopp was left unimpressed by the post-match statement as he felt it was useless to him now.
He said: “Who does that help? We had that situation in the Man Utd game. Did Wolves get points for it? We won’t get points for it. We all thought that when VAR came in it would make things easier.
“The decision was made really quick for that decision. It changed the momentum for the game. It was super difficult but the boys dealt extremely well with it.”

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville was similarly perplexed at the speed in which VAR decided it was offside at the time. He said: “At the time I thought that was onside. Then all of a sudden I heard in my ear ‘check complete’ from the VAR officials to the referee.
“There was no lines. It was so quick. Something was obviously wrong. That is unbelievable. It is a really, really, bad one. That is very significant. I’ve been asking ‘have we got the right cameras at these stadiums?’ – we never seem to be in line anymore.
“The groundman never get the lines wrong on the pitch, the accuracy is incredible. I’ve defended VAR as being a matter of fact but there’s been two or three in the last few weeks where I’ve felt behind the scenes the angle wasn’t right.”
