‘I was on Soccer AM – golf saved my life when alcohol abuse got out of control’

Ex-Soccer AM host 'Tubes' has revealed taking up golf helped him battle his issues against alcohol addiction.

Tubes, who is named Pete Dale, was a Soccer AM favourite, well known for his skit segments on the Saturday morning show, that ended earlier this year. Dale first appeared on Soccer AM as 'Peter the Test Tube Baby', which then earned him the nickname Tubes.

With Soccer AM having aired it's final show back in May, Tubes has been focussing upon producing golf content on his YouTube channel 'Tubes & Ange Golf Life'. 'Ange' is Tubes brother, Andrew Dale.

On the YouTube channel, the pair host a number of ex-Soccer AM hosts, Premier League footballers like Declan Rice and a number of big celebrity names too. However, golf has an added meaning to Tubes, who admits the sport has helped him turnaround his life.

Back at the start of 2018, the Soccer AM favourite revealed he was a recovering alcoholic, who had given up booze midway through 2016. Then, just four weeks later following his admission, he suffered a heart attack, which he only survived because he had given up alcohol and smoking two years before hand.

In an effort to transform his life, Dale took up golf, a sport he now admits essentially saved his life. And speaking to golf ace Andrew 'Beef' Johnston on his 'Beef's Golf Club' podcast, the ex-Sky Sports presenter detailed just how much of an impact golf had upon him in his battle against alcohol addiction.

"My whole life became planned around drink. I'd be buying little vodkas just to have them with me at all times," Tubes told Johnston. "I was constantly chasing that buzz. It was a mess. I was so addicted to alcohol it was unbelievable. First thing I'd do in the morning was pick up a little bottle of vodka and bang. I'd call it a little leveller.

"So when I finally admitted I was ruining other people's lives I said one day 'enough is enough.' I'm not upsetting my mum anymore, she's just lost her husband six months ago, it's not fair. I thought right I need to do stuff which allows me to see my friends and doesn't involve going to the pub. So I was like golf! Golf!

"There was an addiction there [with golf]. When I hit a good shot I got such a buzz and I was celebrating my shots like goals. It really helped me stay off the alcohol 'cause once you get past six months and you transform your life it becomes a lot easier."
