Seventh-tier minnows Horsham are back in the FA Cup after Barnsley’s disqualification for fielding an ineligible player in their first-round replay.
Aiden Marsh was recalled from his loan at York City three days after Horsham and Barnsley drew 3-3 at Oakwell on November 3.
Marsh then started in the replay for Neill Collins’ League One team on November 14 even though he was not eligible, under the rules of the competition.
Subject to any appeal, the Isthmian League side will now travel to face League Two strugglers Sutton United in the second round on Saturday week.
‘I understand the immense disappointment this decision would be to Barnsley FC and its supporters,’ said Horsham chairman Kevin Borrett. ‘I wish them every success in pursuit of promotion back to the Championship.’

Barnsley admitted the offence and issued an apology to their supporters, players and staff.
‘This mistake — although unintentional — falls way below the high standards we set at this club and is simply not what you deserve,’ said a Barnsley club statement. ‘We have already conducted a full internal investigation and have subsequently put safeguards in place to ensure this will never happen again.’
In 2014, Chesterfield were ordered to replay an FA Cup second-round tie against MK Dons for fielding George Margreitter, who had signed on loan from Wolves but not completed the necessary paperwork in time.
Chesterfield won the original tie 1-0 and won the rematch by the same score.
In 2019, Liverpool were fined £200,000, half of which was suspended, for fielding Pedro Chirivella in a Carabao Cup win at MK Dons without international clearance after a loan at Extremadura in Spain, but continued in the competition.
There are a examples of expulsions from the FA Cup from the first round proper onwards.

Droylsden, then of the National League North, were expelled from the Cup in 2008 for fielding Sean Newton against Chesterfield in the second-round replay when he was suspended for five yellow cards.
Newton scored both goals in Droylsden’s 2-1 win. Chesterfield were restored to the competition for a third-round tie at Ipswich Town.
Two years earlier, Bury were disqualified for fielding Stephen Turnbull in a 3-1 win against Chester City in a second-round replay.
Turnbull was on loan from Hartlepool and Bury had failed to lodge Hartlepool’s permission for him to play in the competition with the FA.
