Ralph Hasenhuttl has described Liverpool’s visit to St Mary’s as Southampton’s Champions League final — a billing that will be music to the ears of Pep Guardiola.

Manchester City’s draw at West Ham on Sunday kept alive Liverpool’s hopes of winning the title, but Hasenhuttl has promised that Saints will not lack determination in their final home game of the season on Tuesday night — even though they are now safe from relegation.

‘They (Southampton fans) know what team we are facing,’ said Hasenhuttl, ‘how tough it is, what run of form they are on and, even if they have some injuries, how tough it will be against the Champions League finalists.

Ralph Hasenhuttl says the game against Liverpool is Southampton’s Champions League final

‘It is our Champions League final if you want and we are going for this with everything we have and the team that is on the pitch is the team that will do everything to make them proud.’

City boss Guardiola, half-jokingly, urged Southampton to beat Liverpool 4-0 and Saints have proved what awkward opponents they can be for the league’s top sides. They drew 0-0 at City in September and held them to a 1-1 draw at St Mary’s in March.

Hasenhuttl’s comments will please Pep Guardiola as Manchester City look to win the title

On Southampton’s big-game home form, Hasenhuttl said: ‘Tottenham, we were one man down and did a fantastic job (to draw 1-1).

‘Against Arsenal we won, against Manchester City we have drawn, against Manchester United we have drawn also.

‘We’ve shown against top teams that we can together achieve something very big. That is what we need on Tuesday.’

Hasenhuttl admits it is difficult to prepare to face such a high quality side as Liverpool

‘Against Arsenal we won, against Manchester City we have drawn, against Manchester United we have drawn also.

‘We’ve shown against top teams that we can together achieve something very big. That is what we need on Tuesday.’

Hasenhuttl, though, considers Liverpool ‘the best team in the world maybe’ and ‘one of the most difficult games to prepare for’ due to their flexibility and ‘unbelievable offensive qualities’.

Hasenhuttl, whose side have won just one of their last 11 games, added: ‘We all know Jurgen Klopp and how strong he is at focusing. You can be sure that he doesn’t give up the chance of winning the league.

‘Even if he says it is tough now to go for all four trophies, I know he will do everything to win this game to give himself the chance on the last day. For us it is to not be here to give any presents.

‘We are safe in the league, but we really want to show that we have a different face. This must be motivation enough for us.’
