Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans losing ‘was so inevitable’ as Man Utd subs flop

Manchester United's defeat against Arsenal became 'inevitable' because of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans, according to fans.

The 30-year-old former club captain and returning 35-year-old veteran were both on the pitch at the Emirates after Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof were withdrawn.

United went from 1-0 up in the first-half to the brink of winning it through Alejandro Garnacho – but Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus had the final say.

Evans thought he had been fouled before he accidentally guided Rice's shot past Andre Onana – with Maguire being drawn into the social media fall-out after the third goal.

The duo were all at sea as Jesus skipped his way into a scoring opportunity, effortlessly rolling the ball into the net.

One rival fan said of the defeat: "Maguire and Evans as your centre backs – it was inevitable." A second added: "Evans and Maguire… it was inevitable."

A third wrote: "How do you start a game with Lindelof and Martinez and end with Maguire and Evans. The loss was inevitable."

A fourth posted: "Soon as I saw Evans and Maguire coming on. You just had the feeling of inevitability."

One worried United fan added: "If you spend two transfer windows and end up with Mason Mount and Antony as your most expensive signings. And Maguire and Evans as your centre backs. I'm sorry but we gotta ask questions."

Red Devils fans have now been left concerned at the prospect of one of the replacements featuring against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, with Raphael Varane sidelined and Martinez a potential long-term absentee.

Erik ten Hag was feeling more positive, telling Match of the Day that he felt as though his team deserved to take home all three points – instead of none.
