Graeme Souness experienced Micah Richards fury before Roy Keane intervention

The verdict on Arsenal 3 Manchester United 1

Former Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness felt the wrath of Micah Richards two years before the former Manchester City star intervened to help Roy Keane at the Emirates Stadium. Richards was filmed appearing to pin a fan to a wall after Keane was allegedly headbutted.

Some fans were shocked to see Richards so irate in video footage that circulated on social media. However, former Liverpool captain Souness can vouch for experiencing that side of the former England international first-hand.

Souness and Richards clashed in November 2021 over the role Aaron Wan-Bissaka played in Manchester United conceding a goal in the Manchester Derby. The Scot felt the Red Devils right-back should have done more to prevent a Joao Cancelo cross that led to the first goal.

“He should be sprinting out and stopping the cross,” Souness bemoaned of Wan-Bissaka, whose side lost the game 2-1 against Manchester City.

However, Richards – a former right-back – passionately disagreed with Souness’s take on the situation. He felt that Wan-Bissaka had insufficient support from midfielder Bruno Fernandes, who should have been helping his defender.

“He (Wan-Bissaka) is scared, he knows he hasn’t got help from Fernandes,” argued the former City and England defender.

But Souness was incandescent at Richards’s argument and bluntly shut it down. He snapped: “Try to forget everything you’ve just said.”

It comes after Richards was filmed seemingly pinning up a man during Man Utd’s clash with Arsenal on Sunday. It was later alleged that Sky Sports colleague Keane had been headbutted by the individual.

A 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault. The individual has been released on bail until later this month.

“Police are investigating an incident at Emirates Stadium on Sunday, September 3, during which a man was assaulted,” a Metropolitan Police statement said.

“On Monday, September 4, a 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault (ABH). The man was taken into police custody before being released on bail until a date in late September. Inquiries are ongoing.”

Richards jokingly referenced the situation earlier this week, speaking on the Rest Is Football Podcast alongside Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer. He said he was “not allowed” to talk about the alleged incident.
