- But Souness says Arteta’s grumblings are ‘not a good sign’ for Arsenal fans
Graeme Souness has dismissed Mikel Arteta’s frustrations with refereeing decisions during Arsenal’s defeat to Everton as the pundit claimed the Spaniard’s post-match excuses are ‘not a good sign’.
The Toffees consigned Arsenal to defeat at the Emirates Stadium on Friday thanks to a comical own goal from Bernd Leno, dealing a blow to Arteta’s hopes of clinching European qualification via league position come the end of the season.
The latest defeat means the Gunners have picked up just one point from their last three home league games as they languish in 9th place, nine points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea.

The Gunners fell to a 1-0 defeat by Everton on Friday thanks to an own goal from Bernd Leno
Arteta hit out at VAR in the aftermath of the loss, with a second half penalty for a seemingly soft foul on Dani Ceballos overturned after Nicolas Pepe was deemed to have been fractionally offside in the build up.
‘I think we were better team on the pitch but there are certain decisions we cannot control. Last week it was exactly the same thing,’ the Gunners boss fumed.
‘We can give them a whistle and they can come next to me and whistle the game because to disallow a goal 15 seconds before, eight or nine touches, I saw it ten times, I cannot see it.
‘You can draw the line however you want, how thick you want. When the moment the ball leaves the… I don’t get it. The lottery can be taken the way they want. Zero control.’

But Souness had no sympathy for Arteta who said his excuses were ‘not a good sign’
However, Souness expressed little sympathy for Arteta, and said fans should be concerned in the wake of the manager’s grumblings.
‘There was nothing to get you excited,’ Souness said on Sky Sports. ‘When a manager comes on and highlights the penalty they shouldn’t have had, if that is what you are hanging your hat on to get a result that isn’t good.
‘If you’re hanging your hat on someone diving to get you a penalty that is not a good sign.’
Meanwhile, former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell opined that Arteta’s frustrations with the officials was a reflection of the Spaniard’s exasperations with his team.
The outspoken pundit said Arsenal offer ‘nothing to get you excited’ in a stinging rebuke
‘Most of it is about his own team’s performance,’ Campbell said. ‘There is only so many times you can cover for the players.
‘[It] doesn’t fill me with any joy. Doesn’t fill me with anything to do with positivity, that is for sure. For me it is a lacklustre, lifeless performance but we have seen so many of them this season.
‘It is looking bad. You could assay the buck stops with the manager, of course it does. But as a professional footballer when you cross that white line you have got to perform. There is something on the line and you put in a performance like that.’
