Gary Lineker has been left baffled as to why Scott McTominay is not getting more game time under Erik ten Hag given his stellar Scotland performances.
Manchester United news, exclusives and analysis
McTominay, 26, has fallen down the pecking order at Manchester United and has only featured for seven minutes so far this season, with the midfielder coming off the bench in wins over Wolves and Nottingham Forest.
His lack of opportunities at Old Trafford is a stark contrast to his international form after his goal for Scotland in Friday’s 3-0 win over Cyprus, which saw him become the joint-top scorer in Euro 2024 qualifying.
Bayern Munich were linked with McTominay this summer and even approached United over a possible swap deal but a move never materialised and he remained a Red Devil.
‘I notice Scott McTominay playing and getting in the box a lot,’ Lineker told The Rest Is Football podcast when speaking about the player’s Scotland performances.
‘He scored again in this game, he scored a couple. He’s top scorer in qualifying.
‘It’s nuts, yet he’s not really getting a look in at Manchester United. Someone will go for him [in the January transfer window or next summer] surely?’
McTominay has spent his entire career at United having progressed through the club’s youth academy.
He has made a total of 211 appearances for United to date, registering 19 goals and five assists.
McTominay is looking to inspire Scotland to victory over England when the two nations meet in a special anniversary match later tonight.
