- Fans and pundits insisted that the Chelsea midfielder should’ve been sent off
- It’s LAZY to criticise a team for setting up defensively. It requires intelligence, hard work, discipline and selflessness. Well done Man United – It’s All Kicking Off
Furious fans have insisted that Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo should have been sent off during his side’s clash with Newcastle on Tuesday night.
As the Blues took on the Magpies in their Carabao Cup quarter-final, the £115million summer signing was shown a yellow card inside the first minute for a rash challenge.
Caicedo was seen challenging for the ball with Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon before scraping his studs down the winger’s back-leg.
It left Gordon writhing around in agony before match official Jarred Gillett brandished a yellow card to the former Brighton midfielder.
Despite the incident occurring in the first minute of the match, fans on social media were quick to suggest that Caicedo should’ve been sent off for the challenge.

Sky Sports pundit and former Man United defender Gary Neville was one of the first to comment on the incident, as he bluntly wrote: ‘Red’.
Mail Sport’s Craig Hope made reference to the absence of the Video Assistant Referee on the night, as he wrote: ‘No VAR tonight… with it is that a red card for Caicedo? Went right down the back of Gordon calf/achilles’.
‘Anthony Gordon was injured by a nasty tackle from Caicedo with the latters studs hitting the back of Gordon’s leg. Caicedo escaped another straight red,’ another wrote.
One user brandished it as a: ‘Horrendous challenge from Caicedo on Gordon. That’s a red 9 times out of 10. #nufc’
‘Premier League refs in matches without VAR now frightened to give a red card as they’ve not got a back up if they’re wrong. That’s an absolutely disgusting challenge by Caicedo. The one by Colwill nearly as bad and not even a bloody free kick! #nufc’
In a similar theme, one fan wrote: ‘Caicedo is shown red if there is VAR tonight… Lucky there isn’t. Not a clue what he’s thinking there’.
‘Another red card missed. Horrendous challenge by Caicedo. No interest whatsoever in the ball’, one angry user said.
The Ecuadorian midfielder has struggled in general since his summer arrival, with fans having high expectations for the £115m signing.

Moments after Caicedo’s challenge, Chelsea defender Benoit Badiashile produced a howler moment in defence to gift Newcastle an early lead.
The Blues defender failed to control a ball on the edge of his area before Magpies striker Callum Wilson pounced and stroked the ball into the net.
Wilson had looked to have run out of space after dribbling into the heart of the Chelsea defence, with Badiashile sweeping across to cover for his peers.
But, after mistiming his clearance, it all went wrong for the former Monaco defender, who was left red-faced after Wilson wheeled away in celebration.
