Manchester United need to make the most of their chances – Erik ten Hag
Manchester United were not at the races as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle on Saturday. The Red Devils struggled to get out of first gear as they were brushed aside by the Magpies. Here, Express Sport looks at the biggest talking points from the game…
Ten Hag blows his top
Erik ten Hag was a picture of frustration in the Manchester United dugout as his team got off to a laboured start at St James’ Park. Newcastle bombarded the Red Devils’ back line early doors while United failed to get things moving up top.
After 20 minutes, the Dutchman was out on the touchline punching his fist into his palm to tell his players to get a grip of the game. Later on in the first half, the camera panned over to Ten Hag and Antony Martial having a go at each other as tempers boiled over.
Judging from his outburst on the sidelines, his half-time team talk likely included a few expletives. But it failed to inspire the Red Devils who continued as they left off in the opening stanza.
Martial and Rashford fire blanks
Rashford threw down his gloves in disgust as he was replaced by Antony in the 62nd minute but the Englishman has nothing to complain about. He was far from at his best today, as he has been for the majority of the 2023/2024 campaign.
Last season, the 26-year-old grabbed 30 goals and 11 assists in 56 appearances for United across all competitions and was unlucky to miss out on the shortlist for the 2023 Ballon d’Or. But fast forward to the present day and it’s a completely different story. The Carrington Academy graduate looks completely shot of all confidence this season and continued that worrying trend against Newcastle. He and Antony Martial failed to make any kind of an impact up top and were taken off the field at the same time.

Newcastle dealt Pope injury blow
Nick Pope picked up a nasty shoulder injury during the second half of the game as the Magpies’ injury crisis worsened. The Newcastle shot-stopper stayed down after attempting to prevent a Man Utd attack and was subbed off in the 88th minute.
Luckily for Newcastle, Martin Dubravka is a more than capable replacement and can hold down the fort for as long as Pope is out of action.
