Ten Hag reviews Man Utd's Carabao Cup win over Crystal Palace
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has ruthlessly explained that exciting winger Alejandro Garnacho was ‘not good enough’ in the first few months of the season. Some Red Devils fans have been baffled by Garnacho’s lack of involvement in the Premier League this term, a feeling compounded after his excellent performance in the Carabao Cup against Crystal Palace.
Garnacho rounded off an excellent move to score the opening goal in the 3-0 win over Palace on Tuesday night. The 19-year-old was praised by Ten Hag for his movement to get on the end of Diogo Dalot’s cut-back.
But the Dutchman has insisted that the academy product has not played well enough to earn regular minutes so far this season. Garnacho has made two top-flight starts this term but has not lasted more than 68 minutes in either of them. That is despite several injuries and off-field crises leading to a lack of depth out wide.
“You have seen at the start of the season we played him, his contribution was not good enough,” Ten Hag said. “But he also had some good actions. You see always he is a threat in the game even when he is not playing that well.

“He has to learn when he does his job in defending he will always have his moment and he will always be decisive because he has great qualities.”
When asked if Garnacho had to improve his off-the-ball game, Ten Hag continued: “As well, it’s not only off the ball. But I want to see like today, he is entering the box in the right spot to finish.
“But I think it is quite normal for a player of his age that there is space for a lot of improvement. Everyone likes him, the fans like him, the team likes him, I like him but we also have to demand from him and push him because he can act on a very high level but he has to show it every day.”
Garnacho was excellent against Palace and his goal sent them on their way to a comfortable 3-0 win. Casemiro and Anthony Martial also scored against a lacklustre Eagles side.

Ten Hag also praised new signings Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat. Mount returned from injury to start the game, while Amrabat made his full debut in an inverted left-back role, helping to keep tricky Palace winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi quiet.
Asked about Mount, Ten Hag said: “He played very well. I’m sure when he’s totally integrated he will play much better. He’s just starting at United.
“Sofyan is a player – and that is one of the reasons we signed him – where the team needs him, he will play and he can play in more positions.”
